Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has issued a statement expressing his opposition to a federal government plan to transfer ownership of Granville Island to Port Metro Vancouver. The plan was revealed in a July 2 Vancouver Sun story as being “secret” and “all but done.”

“The City of Vancouver is strongly opposed to Granville Island being controlled by Port Metro Vancouver,” responded Robertson. “We made our position clear to the port and the Government of Canada in discussions and correspondence over many months.”

Robertson said the change in ownership is not a good fit for the iconic Vancouver tourist destination.

“As mayor, I have worked to support a transfer or lease [of Granville Island] to the city, or the creation of an independent local authority with a mandate that is specific to Granville Island’s unique character.”
