Wildfire season made its first big surge of the year around British Columbia with 15 fires in the Prince George area alone Thursday.

Fires near Quesnel, Barkerville and Wells were reported the day before, and authorities blamed lightning as the cause of the blazes.

Meanwhile, the province’s newest firefighting aircraft were deployed to assist extinguishing fires in the Northwest Territories.

B.C. sent five planes in all to assist its northern neighbour.
