A frank and funny obituary about B.C.'s George Ferguson is getting a lot of attention online.

Written by his daughter, Karen Shirley, 53, the obituary starts out by saying "no one could accuse (Ferguson) of having been a loving son, brother or father."

A former United church minister, antique store owner and barfly, Ferguson depended on the kindness of strangers — in particular, women — to help him through life, Shirley wrote.

"Was he a small-time con-man with grandiose schemes? Probably," the obituary says.

But he was also the most exciting member of his family.

"He was a poor man's rhetorician who beguiled certain women into buying into his promises and dreams."

A story about Ferguson also appeared on legacy.com and said he died June 29 of a gastric bleed. He was 77.

His death's timing was "impeccable," Shirley wrote in the Victoria Times Colonist notice, noting his family has now discovered he had been racking up bank and credit card debts.
