Gitxsan block railways at night

Gitxsan Treaty Society members say they’ve closed their land to railroads between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. as discussions continue after the society issued an eviction notice to sport fishers, railroads and the forestry industry.

Initially, the eviction date was Aug. 4 and society members said they have now spoken to CN Rail, which they say has agreed not to run trains through the night.

“They know the deadline, we’re asking them to respect it,” said Beverley Clifton Percival. “But also at the same time we’re being reasonable and we’re being open to discussion.”

Clifton Percival said while the railway is openly involved in discussion, Canada has been dragging its feet on the issue.
