Vancouver Airport could soon have a new addition to its list of accolades: Canada’s Best Restroom.
Vancouver International Airport is one of five finalists in an annual competition that asks Canadians to vote on the nation’s best bathroom.
Saturday marks the start of the final month of voting in the contest, which pits the airport’s bathrooms against those at the Calgary Zoo, a Planet Hollywood location, a Toronto restaurant, and a hotel and spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.
Since 2010, Cintas Canada has tasked Canadians with nominating their favourite public restrooms. Submissions are narrowed down to a final list of five, which the public can vote for online.
“The most important thing we’re looking for is that it’s clean,” said survey editor Rachael Keshishian of reviewing submissions. Once that’s been established, things like design, amenities and flare are taken into account to determine the five finalists.
Cleanliness despite high traffic volumes was a significant factor in the selection of Vancouver Airport, as well as the open-concept design and the quality of the sinks and dryers, said Keshishian.
“At Vancouver International Airport (YVR), we pride ourselves on delivering an exceptional experience to travellers from the moment they arrive right up until departure — and that certainly includes creating innovative restrooms that are both unique and functional,” said Don Ehrenholz, vice-president of engineering with Vancouver Airport Authority.
The public can vote at bestrestroom.com/canada until Sept. 30. The winner receives $2,500 in Cintas services and be added to the event’s Hall of Fame.
