What to look out for when betting on NFL Week 1

By Randall The Handle

It’s a new season and many a gamblin’ folk like to wait a few weeks to let things settle in before they start risking their hard-earned dough.

Others have waited seven long months for this weekend and can’t wait to have betting slips in one hand and a beer in the other as they reclaim their favourite spot on the couch.

Week 1 can be tricky. After all, it’s dangerous to put too much emphasis on pre-season while refraining from putting too much emphasis on last year’s results with all the changes in personnel, both on and off the field.

That said, Week 1 lines have been posted since May and as we draw closer to kickoff, there is plenty to look out for.

THIS WEEK’S WOW FACTOR

The San Diego Chargers own the best against-the-spread record in the NFL as a road underdog over the past decade, cashing in at an astonishing 70% clip (28-12-4). The Bolts are a 3-point pooch at Arizona on Monday night.

It’s subject to change but so far, the public’s top three consensus plays for this week, according to Covers.com are:

KANSAS CITY -3½ points over Tennessee (73%)

CHICAGO -6½ points over Buffalo (72%)

New Orleans -3 over ATLANTA (70%)

Guess which team has the worst against-the-spread record in the NFL since 2007? Perhaps the screwball Cowboys come to mind? The totally inept Raiders? The underachieving Lions? Not so. It’s actually the Bears that own that dubious distinction after compiling a bankroll busting 48-62-4 (43.6%) mark over the past seven years.

OVER/UNDER INFO

Many teams are implementing the no-huddle, fast-pace offence. While it has yet to be proven as a winning formula, it certainly seems to lend itself to high-scoring games. In 2013, the 10 teams that played the fastest (meaning time between plays) combined to go 92-67-1 to the OVERS. The list includes Denver, New England, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Jacksonville, Minnesota, Miami, Buffalo, Washington and Cleveland. A year earlier, the top five quickest teams went OVER at 44-34-2 mark.
