Who to play Madonna in biopic?

By Jane Stevenson, Postmedia Network

Queen Madge is always evolving and whoever takes on the role of portraying her is going to need to be chameleon-like.

Queen Madge is always evolving and whoever takes on the role of portraying her is going to need to be chameleon-like.

Madonna was a mere 20 years old in 1978 when she moved from her native Bay City, Mich., to New York City with reportedly just $35 in her pocket.

So whichever actress is chosen to play The Material Girl in the proposed Universal biopic -Blonde Ambition, about her early days in The Big Apple leading up to her 1983 debut - will have to not only be young but hungry-looking too.

Right now, the King of Pop Michael Jackson's 19-year-old daughter, model and fledgling actress Paris Jackson (who made her acting debut on Fox's Star) is considered a frontrunner to play the titular role in the movie written by Elyse Hollander whose script was No. 1 on the Black List of unmade scripts in 2016.

It didn't hurt that Jackson was a dead ringer for Madonna on a recent Harper's Bazaar cover.

And let's face it, Madonna isn't singing about the intrusive project, penning on Instagram: "Nobody knows what I know and what I have seen. Only I can tell my story. Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool."

Having the King of Pop's daughter play Madge, might help the Queen of Pop come around.

Regardless of what happens, here are my top picks for other casting choices: ARIANA GRANDE The Italian-born pop princess showed major poise when she returned to the Manchester concert and she has the same lineage as Madonna. Not to mention the biggest and best voice of this group. But would her real-life mega-career overshadow the 23-year-old's portrayal of Madge? Not if she's a good enough actress.

LOURDES "LOLA" LEON

The 20-year-old daughter of Madonna is a dead ringer for her mom, sounds like her and most recently modelled for Stella McCartney's latest fragrance, Pop. McCartney described Lola as "an independent, inspirational and free-spirited young woman." Sound familiar? Leon is also currently studying musical theatre at the University of Michigan.

KIERNAN SHIPKA

An old soul in a young person's body, the 17-year-old Shipka was fantastic as the prepubescent Sally Draper on Mad Men that saw her pick up two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Ensemble in a Drama Series. Time magazine named her one of the 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014; and more, recently she stole scenes again this time as the daughter of Bette Davis, opposite Susan Sarandon in Feud: Bette and Joan.

BILLIE LOURD

After losing her mother Carrie Fisher and grandmother Debbie Reynolds one day apart in 2016, the 24-year-old Scream Queens alum is a sentimental fave but I'm only assuming she can actually sing. She's pretty fun and feisty too. Fox has cancelled Scream Queens but don't feel too bad as Lourd has been cast in Ryan Murphy's next instalment of American Horror Story and returns to the big screen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

CHLOË GRACE MORETZ

This 20-year-old began as a child star (Kick-Ass, Let Me In) but has turned into an accomplished actress (Clouds of Sils Maria, The Equalizer). Plus, she's got an on-again, off-again thing with Brooklyn Beckham, the son of former soccer star David Beckham and one-time Spice Girl Victoria (Posh) Beckham, so the red carpet alone will be worth the price of admission.

LILY-ROSE DEPP

The 18-year-old daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis was an ingénue to watch at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for her Chanel - she is a brand ambassador - fashion turn on the red carpet while promoting Planetarium. After forgettable turns in Tusk and Yoga Hosers, the actress/model appears ready to show her acting chops as Isadora Duncan in The Dancer and a '30s-era spiritualist sister (with Natalie Portman) in Planetarium.

MILEY CYRUS

The 24-year-old pop star rebel has finally evolved into an adult performer, making everyone forget Hannah Montana. (Um hello, Wrecking Ball!) But she appears to have discovered a more mature, hipper and less attention-seeking version of herself, growing out her bleached locks and extolling the virtues of love with actor Liam Hemsworth in her new single, Malibu, from her forthcoming album. Plus, she can belt it out with the best of them.

CARA DELEVINGNE

A little old at 24, but with a gorgeous, youthful look, the British beauty's credits include Suicide Squad and the upcoming comic book big screen adaptation Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, opposite Rihanna. So far, the jury is out on her acting but she definitely has a presence as she appeared alongside the rest of Swifty's squad in 2014's Bad Blood video.

TAYLOR MOMSEN

Gossip Girl starlet and now lead singer of rock band The Pretty Reckless (now on their third record) has the edge in terms of an actual singing career, plus the attitude to boot. The 23-year-old was also raised Roman Catholic and studied dance like Madonna and - get this - became the face of Madge's Material Girl fashion line in 2010.

FRANCES BEAN COBAIN

Casting the 24-year-old daughter of late Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain and Hole's Courtney Love might drive Madonna nuts given their history includes Courtney interrupting Madonna's live interview at the 1995 MTV Movie Awards. On the other hand, Frances'career as a model - she appeared in Harper's Bazaar dressed as Evita (arguably Madge's best film) - and visual artist might score her some brownie points with the art-loving Madonna.
