One of the most strategic decisions contestants can make in The Amazing Race Canada is to decide which team member is going to tackle a proposed challenge.

Edmonton couple Karen and Bert Richards excelled throughout the competition by alternating tasks, racing their way to the top four.

“I enjoyed any challenge that highlighted me and my wife working well together,” Bert tells the Sun down the line from Edmonton.

But Tuesday night, Bert decided to take on a bug challenge that found Karen having to count and differentiate species at an insect laboratory in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., while the creepy crawlies marched all over her hubby’s head.

It’s a choice they both wish they could do over.

Bert gamely put his noggin in a sealed box while dozens of cockroaches crawled around his head.

It wasn’t one of his proudest moments.

“I don’t like how I looked,” he laughs. “Looking back, I would have toughened up a little more on that.”

After coming in last and having to take a penalty at a curling faceoff earlier in the episode, the couple arrived at the bug challenge with plenty of teams still in the race.

But Bert couldn’t keep himself calm, and Karen kept getting the insect count wrong leading to a last-place finish.

Fans will no doubt wonder if they could have swapped places.

“We weren’t allowed to switch, but we did talk about pulling my head out so I could calm down and then putting my head back in,” Bert says. “But if I took my head out, I wasn’t going back in there.”

With just three teams remaining, and Sam and Paul the clear frontrunners, we ask Karen and Bert how Korey and Ivana and team Give’r (Kenneth and Ryan) can possibly outwit and outlast the Toronto couple.

“I think Korey and Ivana or the Give’r boys needs to just be focused,” Karen says. “They need to be focused and driven and posses a will to win.”

“The key to beating Sam and Paul is making no mistakes,” Bert adds. “The teams that are left are going to have to take the time to study their maps before they drive off. They’re going to have to avoid the urge to just drive off to get a head start. It’s going to make a difference to know where they’re going so that they can avoid getting lost. Slowing down is going to be the best way to beat Sam and Paul. Being methodical, taking time – that’s the only way teams are going to do it. I know that it sounds weird, but you make more mistakes when you are rushing.”

An early alliance between Korey and Ivana and Team Give’r in next week’s season finale could be another way to eliminate Sam and Paul.

“I think if opportunities arise to bump Sam and Paul first, then Korey and Ivana and team Give’r should work together,” Bert says. “But only in those moments, because they’re all still going to have to face each other for the same prize.”

Karen and Bert say they began the season rooting for Korey and Ivana, but watching the show throughout the summer they’ve grown fond of the Give’r boys.

“I’m more for Team Give’r,” Bert says with a laugh. “I like watching them; I like the way they play. I didn’t like watching Korey and Ivana as much as I liked meeting them.”

Now that they have had a taste of reality TV, the couple says they’ll both be ready for an all-star season of the Amazing Race Canada – if and when it happens.

Just don’t expect to see them in the MasterChef Canada kitchen.

“I can’t cook for nothing,” Bert chuckles.

The Amazing Race Canada finale airs Tuesday, Sept. 12.
