Vancouver Island man shot while golfing
A 60-year-old Ladysmith man is recovering from a gunshot wound after he was struck in the leg by an errant bullet while enjoying a round of golf.
The incident occurred Aug. 31.
Nanaimo RCMP say the man had just finished his round at Winchelsea View Golf Course in Lantzville when he felt a sudden sharp pain in his lower calf.
Police say a group of golfers came to his assistance and applied basic first aid.
The man drove himself to the hospital in Ladysmith where X-rays confirmed a bullet was lodged in his calf.
RCMP believe someone may have been doing target practise in the area.
Police say nearby residents had heard gunshots sporadically throughout the day.
"There is nothing to indicate the male was targeted and his injury may have resulted from an individual or others target practising in the adjacent rural area. Having said that, it is unlawful to discharge a firearm within 100 metres of any building and the basic rule of firearm safety is always know your background and beyond," said Const. Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Police say the man is expected to make a full recovery.
