In today's market it is important to provide all necessary means of contact on your resume. Although all parts of a resume are critical, outdated phone numbers and inappropriate unprofessional e-mail addresses probably are just as important; if not more.
The first thing employers look at on the resume is the contact information. After all, it is usually up front on the document. This being said, you want to portray professionalism in your e-mail address.
DOs
1. Keep it professional.
The most commonly used e-mail address type on resumes is the simple and effective method of using one's own name plus one of the many free e-mail providers.
The benefit of this choice is that it is virtually risk free and easy. Example: johndoe@hotmail.com, johndoe@gmail.com, jdoe@yahoo.com
2. Buy your own domain.
One way to prove your initiative is to spend a little and buy your own domain name. Decision makers (i.e.; hiring managers, human resources etc,) are always impressed when they see job seekers that have taken the time and effort to obtain their own domain name and e-mail address for their own use instead of using a free e-mail provider.
It is not always necessary but why not create a simple site that sells you and have a domain that goes with it? Take advantage of the space and promote yourself.
Examples: johndoe@johndoe.com, johndoe@Vancouvermarketingguy.com, johndoe@johnsprojectmanagement.com
DON'Ts
1. Use nicknames or inappropriate words.
Let's face it, we have all used or have thought of using playful addresses when e-mail first became popular, or when we were younger. These have no relative meaning to professionals outside of your own social circles or say too much about our personal lives. Stay away from using such legacy personal e-mail addresses on your resume. Remember, first impressions count, so if you want to be a professional, show it.
Here are some examples: john69@email.com, maddog@email.com, jpdidy1977@email.com
2. Try to be too smart or funny.
There is a fine line between funny and professional and unfortunately that line is varies from person to person. I always advise people to stay away from using overt humor as this can be a real turn off. Here are some examples: Hirejohn@email.com, Rightfit@email.com
3. Stay away from politically incorrect.
These obvious e-mail addresses should never be included on the page of your resume. Avoid all connotation of your age, your race, your gender - period.
Here are some examples: sugardaddy1974@email.com, brazilianguy@email.com
