General Motors confirmed it will make its new Buick Regal model at the Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario as part of an agreement with the Canadian government in return for billions in government aid.
Production of the mid-size sport sedan will begin in the first quarter of 2011, the company said. The Buick Regal joins the Chevrolet Camaro, Equinox and the GMC Terrain as the fourth new vehicle to be produced at the plant under the accord. A fifth vehicle will be named at a later date, the company said.
General Motors, which emerged from bankruptcy protection in July, received $9.5 billion from Canada to help the company survive in an accord that left the Canadian and Ontario governments with 11.7% of the carmaker.
The company said the Oshawa plant has been running at maximum overtime since June 2009 and that will continue into the new year to keep up with demand for the Camaro.
General Motors employs 9,000 in Canada.
