TORONTO - 

Canada's main stock index closed lower on Tuesday as gains among banks and insurers failed to fend off broad losses in energy and mining shares.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE unofficially closed down 38.92 points, or 0.32 percent, at 12,009.90.
