Glitzy Vancouver galas and hearty guffaws 0
It was a pretty swank affair at the JABC Business Hall of Fame Gala, where distinguished guests gathered to honour three new inductees: Brian A. Canfield (Telus Corporation chairman), Dave Ritchie (Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers co-founder and chairman emeritus) and, posthumously, Milton K. Wong (chairman emeritus of HSBC Global Asset Management [Canada] Limited). The three laureates were being recognized for their contribution to free enterprise and for their positive influence on entrepreneurial youth in our province.
Dressed to the nines, people mingled at the meet-and-greet reception in the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver before the sold-out ceremonies commenced. Among some of the notable attendees were guest speaker Gen. R. J. Hillier, Jimmy Pattison and last, but definitely not least, Canucks legend the one, the only - Geoff Courtnall.
Name that actor
The 2012 Leo Awards gala was a sea of beautiful, kinda, sorta vaguely familiar faces. That's because the ceremony, held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, honours the best in B.C. film and television. Which means there's a lot of local up-and-comers in attendance. But if the working actors weren't instantly recognizable on Saturday, chances are one day they will be. With that in mind, I like to think of attending the Leos as an opportunity to bank some future bragging rights. For example, if and when Brandon Jay McLaren from The Killing should land a breakout role that will make him a household name, I can say I kinda, sorta brushed elbows with him at the Leos - how cool is that?
When's the last time you laughed so hard your sides hurt? If it's been too long to remember, then you might want to check out standup comedian Trevor Boris the next time he does a set here. Hot on the heels of his Conan appearance, the Toronto-based funny man performed at Yuk Yuk's for the club's media appreciation night last week. And he totally killed it on stage. I LMAO'd - big time. MC Dino Archie was also pretty damn funny. So the next time you need a laugh, keep an eye out for those two names in your local comedy listings.
