VOLKMAR RICHTER, 24 HOURS

RACHEL GETTING MARRIED

Finally here's the film that's got 10 such great reviews in Toronto and Oscar buzz for Anne Hathaway. The former Prada enthusiast and diary princess plays an addict who comes out of rehab and shows up at her sister's wedding. Today, Wednesday and Thursday.

HUNGER

If you can stand the images that progress from cold, to filthy to harrowing, you're in for a gripping drama about Northern Ireland. In 1981, IRA firebrand Bobby Sands died by hunger strike. Michael Fassbender plays him brilliantly, especially in a debate with a priest. Today and tomorrow.

ADORATION

Atom Egoyan's latest is less morose than usual and draws us in like a puzzle to be solved. Why is a student writing that his father was a monster and a terrorist? The truth comes out in fragments and endless time shifts, with big themes rather awkwardly attached. Today and tomorrow.

THE LONGWANG CHRONICLES

This documentary shows life in a Chinese village so candidly that Beijing has effectively banned it. It must be the hapless Communist party meeting we see, or the loose election day procedures or the illegal underground church services. Modestly amazing. Today at noon.
