Actresses-turned-directors added to TIFF lineup
By SUN MEDIA

British actresses Samantha Morton and Rachel Ward are among new directors whose films were added today to Discovery program in the Toronto International Film Festival.

Morton, twice nominated for an acting Oscar, has made The Unloved, a portrait of a young British girl taken from an abusive family to be raised in government care.

Ward, best known for her starring turn in the blockbuster 1980s TV miniseries The Thorn Birds, has directed Beautiful Kate, about a writer who confronts his dying father about the long-ago mysterious deaths of his brother and twin sister. Her husband, Australian actor Bryan Brown, stars.

Both movies are making their international premieres.

Among other TIFF ’09 movies announced yesterday in the Special Presentations, Discovery and Vangard programs were Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces, about a troubled blind writer. Penelope Cruz again stars in an Almodovar film.
