Canadian to play Mary Poppins on Broadway
By JOHN COULBOURN, SUN MEDIA

Move over, Susan. Valerie Boyle had a dream, too, and hers is also finally coming true.

Only Valerie had to wait a lot longer than Susan Boyle.

Four years after she auditioned for the part that went to Jane Carr, the British-born Canadian Boyle is slated to open on Broadway next Friday as Mrs. Brill, the housekeeper in the ongoing production of Mary Poppins.

Boyle, who was initially signed to essay the role in the touring production of the show, appeared earlier this year in the Los Angeles production of the much-loved musical.

She was packing at her Toronto home yesterday, preparing to move to New York, where she begins rehearsals with the New York company on Monday.

Boyle’s Broadway debut comes the day before her 61st birthday, and it seems one would be hard pressed to come up with a better present to help her celebrate it.

“It’s a very first for me.” an ebullient Boyle said yesterday. “I’d sort of given up on the dream of going to Broadway ... I’m thrilled.”
