Personality a piece of the puzzle

By KRISTEN MCKENZIE

So You Think You Can Dance Canada judge Luther Brown has some advice for wannabe dancers coming to the open audition in Vancouver tomorrow.

"The first thing [dancers] need to do is bring personality," he said. "It's not just about going up there and doing a routine."

Contestants should take heed - Brown knows what he's talking about. The hip-hop choreographer has worked with some of the world's most successful talent, including Janet Jackson and Diddy.

Those who make it to the top 20 can also expect to be pushed to the limit by Brown's intricate hip-hop choreography.

"It's really not as easy as people think," he said of creating fresh routines for the show within limited time frames. "I'm just going to make it up for Season 3."

And if Brown doesn't like what he sees on the dance floor, he won't hesitate to say so.

"It's not hard at all [to give criticism]," he said. "You just gotta say what's on your mind."

Especially when some of the dancers at the open auditions are, well, clueless.

"We've seen some weird-ass auditions," Brown said, referring to one flag-carrying dancer who refers to himself as Captain Canada. "There's always a set of dancers that leaves your mind boggled ... they need to make a DVD of some of the people that haven't gotten on the show."

SYTYCD Canada auditions for Season 3 are at the Centre for Performing Arts all-day Saturday. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
