The next X-Men movie is evolving rapidly - with director Bryan Singer back at the helm of the franchise he started.

X-Men: First Class, like this year’s Wolverine flick, is a prequel, which will portray the formative years of Professor Xavier and Magneto and their school for superhuman mutants, Singer told Variety.

Singer directed the first two X-Men movies, but dropped out of the third to make Superman Returns. He was replaced by Brett Ratner (Rush Hour).

X-Men: The Last Stand went on to be commercially popular but largely reviled by fans and critics. Another Wolverine film starring Hugh Jackman is also in development. Singer’s frequent collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie), is penning the script for Wolverine 2.
