Mufasa and Simba in The Lion King (Handout)
That's My Boy marks the latest in a long line of Adam Sandler movies that can only loosely be described as comedies. The guy who gifted us with dumb but funny gems like Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison and The Wedding Singer has been on a long, slow decline, and this one ain't exactly pumping the brakes.
But it's also part of a long pedigree of films that look at the relationship between father and son. And while Sandler playing a man-child dad to Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg might not rate among the best -- heck, Sander's own Big Daddy was better than this -- it does make us look back fondly at other big-screen dads and lads.
In honour of Father's Day, here's a Sandler-free round-up of some of our favourite cinematic father-son pairings.
George and Marty McFly (Back to the Future, 1985)
Meeting your dad as a man your own age would be weird, and helping him hook up with your mom -- who happens to have a crush on you -- would be even weirder. But Crispin Glover and Michael J. Fox made it work so very well.
Henry and Indiana Jones (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, 1989)
There can be no cooler father-son pairing than Han Solo and James Bond, right? Harrison Ford as Indy and Sean Connery and his headstrong dad gave this third installment in the Indiana Jones franchise a huge dose of humour and heart.
Mufasa and Simba (The Lion King, 1994)
Being a single parent in a Disney movie is pretty much a death sentence, yet we were still devastated when Mufasa was killed in front of a horrified Simba's eyes. Luckily, Mufasa lives on forever in his son's heart. Sniff.
John and Homer Hickham (October Sky, 1999)
Lots of movies look at the complex dynamic created when a father tries to impose his wishes on a reluctant son, but the always amazing Chris Cooper and Jake Gyllenhaal gave this one memorable emotional heft.
Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (The Empire Strikes Back, 1980)
You thought being grounded was harsh? Try having your dad cut off your hand with a lightsaber. Of course, Vader (the second dad on this list voiced by James Earl Jones, after Mufasa) ultimately redeems himself by sacrificing his life to save Luke.
Chris and Christopher Gardner (The Pursuit of Happyness, 2006)
Real life father-son duo Will and Jaden Smith didn't just tug audiences' heartstrings in this based-on-a-true-story drama of a down-and-out man caring for his son, they grabbed those heartstrings by the fistful and yanked. Hard.
Man and Boy (The Road, 2009)
This grim, gritty tale based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name paired Viggo Mortensen and newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee in one of the most harrowing, heartbreaking father-son stories we've seen in years.
