African-American hair subject of Rock's doc

By 24 HOURS NEWS SERVICES

Chris Rock had to struggle to get his latest project off the ground, he tells parade.com, but he knew it was all worth it when he laid hands on Oprah.

Rock produces and hosts the hilarious and occasionally serious documentary Good Hair, in which he explores the challenges faced by African-American women obsessed with keeping their tresses straightened.

"Every time I pitched making this movie, whether it was to a studio executive or manager or agent, they always tried to change the subject. They were like, 'So when's that next special coming?' or 'Did you read the script for Lethal Weapon 5 yet?' But, I've been wanting to do this movie for, you know, almost 20 years. I kind of stuck with it and jumped in there and finally did it."

"The idea first came to me when I was at the Bronner Brothers Hair Show. It's where all these different hairdressers from all over the world who cater to blacks converge in Atlanta for this competition The Hair Battle Royale. It's great, it's weird and it's flamboyant.

Rock says Oprah has amazing hair.

"She let me put my hands in there on her show and it was just an experience my hands will never forget. It was like Lord of the Rings. All this power came into my body. Suddenly, I knew the answer to all questions in the universe."
