LOS ANGELES — Canadian actress Klea Scott’s newborn baby, Captain, is clearly already in command.
Captain Ronin Langs, born Jan. 12 to the Ottawa mom and his theatre director dad John Langs, won’t be permitting his parents a date night any time soon.
“We were going to go out for a few hours tonight, my mother is here from Ottawa, but evening is his crying time and ... well, I’m just not ready to leave him for even a minute,” laughed Scott.
Scott, co-star of CBC’s Intelligence and a regular on other past series such as Brooklyn South and Millennium, and Langs’ first started calling the baby “Captain” as a joke while they awaited his arrival.
“We did a place setting and wrote ‘Captain Chuckles’. ”
But the unusual — and potentially very trendsetting — name stuck when he popped out, looking very strong and alert.
“When he plays hockey they’ll be able to call him ‘Cap’, ” said Scott, who grew up ice skating on the Rideau Canal. “We just have to figure how to make his hockey career happen in Los Angeles.”
The usually glamourous 41 year old joked about the pressures of getting back into shape in order to go on auditions next month for the start of pilot season.
“In Hollywood, you have new moms like Kendra (Wilkinson of Playboy fame) looking all hot two weeks after giving birth.
“I’m breast feeding so I can feel my gut contracting every day, but I’m still waiting for my butt to contract!”
Scott plans on auditioning for some shows here and in Canada via videotape — the way she was hired for the role of Mary Spalding in Intelligence — so she can stay with the newborn as much as possible.
“I miss acting,” said Scott, who also had major roles in two Steven Spielberg films, Minority Report and Collateral. “I will go back to it.”
Although Captain was born in L.A., Scott will make him a dual Canadian by applying for his citizenship through the Canadian Consulate.
“I want him to be Canadian, it’s important to me.”
LUCK BE A LADY: Pop star Avril Lavigne has brought the luck of the French Canadian to a chain of California stores.
Abbey Dawn, Lavigne’s trendy skater-boy line of clothing and accessories, helped statewide sales of Kohl’s department stores grow a massive 40% the past year, company executives report.
While retailers such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Macy’s and Target are barely pulling through the recession, Kohl’s sales in California have translated into a lot of mini-Avrils around here.
Unlike other stars who merely lend their name to a product, Lavigne is said to be very active in choosing the style, fabric and colours of the apparel.
