PETA gives Lawrence chilly reception

Jennifer Lawrence has incurred the wrath of animal rights activists at PETA for making light of a squirrel-skinning scene in her Oscar-nominated movie Winter's Bone.

The Hunger Games star is seen ripping the fur from the animal in the critically-acclaimed 2010 film and she discusses the bloody scene in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

However, the 21-year-old actress couldn't help but make a joke about PETA, telling the magazine, "I should say it wasn't real for PETA. But screw PETA."

A representative for the animal rights organization has now hit back at Lawrence and urged her to be more compassionate.

The spokesperson tells WENN, "She's young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart. As Henry David Thoreau said, 'The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest.' The squirrel was 'screwed,' not PETA ... We hope Jennifer will learn from other young celebrities like Justin Bieber, Lea Michelle and Kellan Lutz, who are using their influence to help rather than hurt animals."
