Since great Canadian actor Donald Sutherland suddenly has a whole lot of work in Hollywood again -- he's starring in three movies and a new TV show called Living Loaded -- we know of a place where he can really live the vida loca while in town.
And it's his very own Hollywood mansion that he lived in during his wild bachelor days when he dated starlets such as Jane Fonda.
QMI Agency has discovered the house owned by the rugged, snowy-haired actor during the height of his Hollywood power in the 1970s and early 1980s has been quietly put up for rent.
County property records show Sutherland's name was on the deed of the very tony house at 548 Crestline Drive during that time. But it's unknown when he sold it and when it was transferred to the current owner. By the mid-1980s, the M*A*S*H actor was spending most of his time in Canada and Europe.
He had also met current wife Francine Racette on a Canadian western drama, Alien Thunder, in 1974. The couple eventually ended up living full-time in France to raise their three sons.
The sumptuous five-bedroom, five-bathroom home on a palm-tree lined quiet street in the Brentwood area, was built in 1933 and retains an art deco look.
The current owner tried to put it up for sale a few years ago for about $3.5 million, but there were no takers. Now, it's being advertised for rent for $17,500 per month. While the home has been painted and renovated since Sutherland lived there, it has kept its old-world charm and elaborate landscaping. The main arched door to the home, made of heavy oak wood, opens to a period marble floor covered in a mosaic of marble. A sweeping staircase to the immediate left travels to the second storey, where the bedrooms are located.
The master bedroom is an architectural marvel with rounded ceilings covered in mouldings and built in book cases.
The thrice-married actor was a bachelor while living there. But he was famously dating his Klute co-star Fonda, during the filming of the 1971 movie.
In an interview with the BBC, Sutherland recalled his ramped-up sexual chemistry with Fonda. "We had a wonderful, wonderful year and a half. She was terrific."
Although soon-to-be famous son Kiefer was living with mom Shirley back in Canada, the budding actor most certainly visited his dad at the home many times, jumped on the beds and romped with his pals in the private backyard pool.
Kiefer got his first Hollywood gig, Max Dugan Returns, in 1983 by the time Sutherland had left the house.
