In Bollywood, Sonam Kapoor's claim to fame has been her iconic fashion sense as opposed to any significant impact on the film industry. But now, it seems, the style maven is out to change all that.
Since being cast as a student in Anand L. Rai's Raanjhana, Kapoor's been busy practising with theater groups associated with Delhi's acclaimed Jawaharlal Nehru University to prepare for her role.
The love story is written by Himanshu Sharma whose previous work includes the highly successful Tanu Weds Manu in 2011. Set in Varanasi, the story centers on a middle-class boy and girl. Sharma is known for infusing his work with authentic details, charming plots and believable characters, so hopes are running high for the new rom-com.
Kapoor's romantic lead will be none other than Kolaveri Di actor Danush, who according to Rai, " will melt everyone's heart in the role of this loveable guy from Varanasi. The female character too will have a mind of her own despite hailing from a small town. She is street-smart and not a pushover."
JNU is very popular for its street plays and Kapoor is continually rehearsing to get the hang of things. She's committed to the same practice routine as the rest of the actors, according to sources. "It's completely new to me," she said, adding she believes the additional practice will help her capture the character's sensibilities.
Although there's been a lot of speculation about the musical composer for the film, the latest buzz is that Academy Award winning composer A.R. Rahman (Jai-Ho!) has been brought in to score the music.
Raanjhnaa has already started filming, but the release date has yet to be announced. Keep an eye out to see whether Kapoor's efforts to hone her skills will send her career skyward or fall flat.
