Aboriginal pop star Jana Mashonee was in town last night to inspire local youth.
The singer, who recently released the award-winning album New Moon Born, reached out to Squamish Nation youth Thursday during a speaking appearance at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre in North Vancouver.
She also used the occasion to perform a few of her songs.
Mashonee, born in North Carolina, has picked up an award for Best Pop Album at the Indian Summer Music Awards and is a four-time nominate artist at the Native American Music Awards.
In 2002, she started her own non-profit organization, Jana’s Kids, which awards native youth with educational scholarships.
