Skinny jeans a must-have this fallBy HEATHER TOSKAN
One of the fastest ways to jump into the '80s revival trend starts with a new pair of skinny jeans. "Although there's quite a range of jeans styles to choose from, the skinny jean silhouette dominates for fall," says Cora Mau, a Vancouver-based spokesperson for Mavi Jeans. Skinnies rock a retro vibe in bright colours and shades of black and deepest indigo, and grey is another favourite. "Grey is the new black," says Albert Alloul, a Montreal-based creative director for the Guido and Mary brand. Hardware details such as zippered hem lines and studded trim also pay homage to the styles of the era, as do jeans and jackets treated with sanded, bleached and acid-washed finishes that aid in creating multiple variations on the distressed look. The look advances from distressed to fashionably destroyed as rips and tears raise the bar on skinny jeans. Denim skirts, vests and jackets are other stylish ways to update your wardrobe. Denim vests and jackets go beyond the ordinary, embellished with studded trim and stand up collars. Wear edgy, military-inspired denim jackets and vests with jeans, and gain extra mileage by pairing them with dresses, tailored pants and skirts that are already in your closet. "Military and motorcycle inspired pieces layer on to preppy basics to create a fun, fashion forward look," says LeAnn Nealz, an executive vice president and chief design officer for American Eagle Outfitters. Denim vests and jackets look especially preppy when paired with crisp white shirts and plaid mini skirts. Vests can also be layered under traditional blazers to create yet another variation on the look. --- style tips - Denim vests and jackets go beyond the ordinary, embellished with studded trim and stand up collars.
