Pink Tartan's spring-summer 2010 collection

By ANITA SHARMA AND LIZA SARDI, SUN MEDIA

TORONTO - Things are tough in the fashion world.

Pink Tartan designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran conquered the runway with her "urban warrior" themed spring-summer 2010 collection at LG Fashion Week last night.

The designs were for "a strong woman who's sexy and feminine at the same time," said Newport-Mimran, who said her muse was Uma Thurman from the Kill Bill movies.

Fitting for a woman whose designs adorn some of Hollywood's strongest actresses including Kim Catrall, Kate Hudson and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Strong shoulders were a predominant theme throughout the collection to showcase "a woman's strength."

Many of the jackets and oh-so short dresses featured bulky pads -- but in a futuristic twist they were on the outside of the garments.

Shoulders were also accentuated by several sleeveless numbers including a sleeveless trench coat, hooded sleeveless coat and one-shouldered dresses.

The trench was shorter, with big buttons, tie belts and high stand-up collars.

The bolero also made a comeback, often adorned with sequins over solid coloured jumpsuits.

The play on curves came with waists on coats, dresses and tops cinched in with long thick brown leather or tie belts. Buckled belts also adorned many sleeves, most often pushed up above the elbow.

Exposed zippers were prominent on most of the mini-dresses as were sheer fabrics and snug, shape accenting tailoring.

Dresses were short, several featuring animal prints in the form of leopard patterned sequins, including a daring racer-backed dress. Short was also the theme for several shirt dresses.

The nautical theme which kicked off the show and popped up again several times. Striped dresses and a pair of wide-legged sailor pants echoed the playful theme.

Black leather skirts and a rusty-caramel coloured leather jacket also stood out.

Interesting accessories included Robin Hood-styled hats and ankle socks with sky-high heels.
