Talk about a yummy collection.
Aime designer Monica Mei used a smorgasbord of colours inspired by figs, pistachios, black olives, biscotti and limoncello for her spring-summer 2010 collection.
"It's all about Italian food," said Mei backstage after unveiling her line at LG Fashion Week.
"I was inspired by travelling to the Mediterranean," says Mei, who spent three weeks prior to creating the collection on a self-prescribed "digital detox" visiting exotic locales such as Monte Carlo, Monaco and Capri.
"I just watched women living the dolce vita lifestyle -- they were confident and comfortable with themselves."
The ideals she says she saw seemed to fit perfectly with her personal philosophy to "love yourself, love others and love luxury."
Fabrics she chose to use were soft and sumptuous, all-natural or sustainable materials including silk, bamboo and organic cotton.
The result was a collection which reflected easy living -- but also a touch of sportiness.
There were shorts and tees, but each featured tailoring which brought them close to the body, accentuating curves.
Construction and tailoring were a big focus, said Mei.
Often cuffs, waists and hems featured contrasting fabric. When bolder patterns were used, gold was often an accent. When the outfit was neutral, colour and pattern was used at the neck to draw attention upwards.
Waists were also flattered on her dresses were cinched by wide elastic belts, complemented by ruffles. Ruffles were also featured on fluted sleeves.
Mei, who has drawn accolades and awards since she graduated from Ryerson University in 2007, says she was deliberately trying to flatter curves, draw attention to the bust or down to the knees.
In keeping with eco-chic, Mei's accompanying marketing materials was printed on chlorine- free recycled paper, approved by the Forest Stewardship Council.
