The chill in the air spells out the cold truth: Time to bundle up.

Capes and cape-inspired wraps and coats are among the latest runway offerings to add flair to everyday outerwear.

"I'm inspired by the way Parisian women drape themselves in wraps and shawls," says Linda Lundstrom, chief creative director of the Lundstrom brand. "The cowl neck poncho in our current collection was draped to give this same look."

Although some designers recommend short and structured versions of the cape, others are showing knee- length styles for a more flowing and dramatic look.

Fashion giants such as Chloe, Donna Karan, Max Mara and Isaac Mizrahi are taking capes for a spin with leather-trimmed and checked interpretations on the look.

Novelty collars and trim offer plenty of interest. Oversized, folded-back collars are possible features, while funnel collars and hoods stand up for extra warmth.

Fancy buttons, toggle closures, double-breasted styling, faux fur trim and ruffled edges are among the other details adding both style and substance to many capes.

Cinch them with a favourite belt to create a more body-conscious silhouette.

Play up your cape's full dramatic potential by wearing it with swashbuckling, knee-high boots and elbow-length gloves.

Cloak yourself in standout fashion shades of red, purple, golden rod and teal or opt for the ever classic, dramatic staple of black.

If capes appeal, but you'd prefer a coat, go with the flow in a swing jacket with cape-like, Sherlock Holmes-style sleeves. Coats with built-in fabric belts and streamlined bodices combine cape-like styling with a more streamlined appearance.

"The Angel Laparka in my collection borrows sleeves from the cape, but allows for a more fitted bodice," says Lundstrom.

If capes simply aren't your thing, other on-trend coat styles include faux fur jackets, double-breasted military-inspired coats, bomber jackets and pea coats.
