Naana Tennachie Yankey has travelled through England and the United States to carve herself out a spot in the fashion world.

And after having worked as an apprentice to Marc Jacobs and Eve Gravel, the Ghana-born Yankey is trying her hand with her own label, Coccolily.

Her fall/winter 2010 collection titled Royal: A Modern Journey was completely appealing.

Those that didn’t think the show was worth watching and gave up their seats (they were numerous) don’t know what they missed. Those that stayed appeared very enthusiastic about the new line.

As a fan of Betsey Johnson, I was quickly charmed by Coccolily’s similar style.

A classic, ultra-feminine base with funky accents and a touch of wild turns the classic princess look into that of a modern day rebel starlet.

It was all eye catching. The young designer successfully built a collection that is both solid and bold, dedicated to the elegant woman that likes to please.

The collection features bustiers reminiscent of old-fashioned corsets, short dresses in the style of Marie-Antoinette, chandelier earrings and other opulent jewelry, crinoline skirts, noble colours such as black and cream as well as plenty of lace and satin. Not too much, just enough. The style was consistent from start to finish.

Much attention was paid to the stockings and long satin gloves. From head to toe, the attention to detail was impressive. A few wool long coats at the end of show reminded us that this was a collection for the cooler climes.

We can’t wait for the season when the leaves start falling.
