Whether your summer wardrobe runs to basics like jeans and tees or classic sheath frocks or runs to Bohemian-inspired peasant tops and maxi dresses, it’s time to steep yourself in style with the season's stunning jewelry.
While diamonds and precious metals add plenty of flash for those with the cash to accommodate them, you’ll shine just as well in colourful jewelry composed of bright and sparkling stones, crystals and mixed metals.
“Fashion jewelry is an economical and personal way to update any wardrobe. This season, colour is so, so hot and (wearing) colourful jewelry shows your fashion awareness,” says Maja Bremer, the creative director of Vancouver-based Myka Designs.
“Summer jewelry trends are all about colour. Fresh, easy-to-wear pieces that can be layered are really popular now in shades of aqua, mint and coral,” says Brooke Mosher, a jewelry designer with Brooklyn Designs.
According to those in the jewelry trade, it’s time for layered necklaces, stacks of bracelets, bold rings, pendants and chandelier earrings that feature plenty of movement and colour.
“The four major (jewelry) trends this season are colour, including neon, citrus, tangerine and shades of blue,” says Raychel Moore, a spokesperson for Lia Sophia.
According to Moore, the three other major jewelry trends are large pendants, bold silver and feminine, romantic pieces that incorporate pearls, pastels and flowers.
Silver jewelry as well as pieces made of turquoise stones remain summer standards, but warm and mixed metals add to the season’s eclectic tone.
“Gold is becoming just as popular as silver. For those who haven’t ventured into the world of gold, matte gold is a great way to try this style. Mixing metals also continues to be fun and stylish,” adds Moore.
“Gold, rose gold and antique brass are all making a comeback. We see a lot of gold in magazines and in Europe, but the rhodium and silver metals are still strongest for us … We’ve seen a dramatic increase in coloured jewellery sales and colours such as hyacinth, coral, aqua and fern green are all popular in pieces both small and large,” says Bremer.
“The bohemian free-spirit look is in this summer. Maxi dresses, flower-power … and for accessories, beads and large pendants, turquoise and coral, multiple layers of necklaces, flowers with bold colours; gold, brass and silver all mix it up,” says jewelry designer Irit Sorokin, of Vancouver-based Irit Sorokin Designs.
“Spring/summer has brought a nice mix of contemporary, Bohemian and classic (jewelry) … It’s really about the unexpected mixing of the styles that allows women to get creative when accessorizing. A very structured contemporary necklace looks great paired with a flowing maxi dress,” says Kelsey Perry, a Lenexa, Kansas-based Silpada spokesperson.
While both small and large statement-making earrings and necklaces are on trend, this is no time to shy away from standout pieces and wearing several of them all at once.
“There’s a huge upswing in layering bracelets and bangles, as well as wearing multiple rings on your fingers. It really is the more the merrier,” adds Perry.
