Throwing a party? Here's how to dress for it 0
May writes: My 60th birthday is approaching and my family is throwing a huge party including a band and professional photographer.
I usually wear jeans and soft coloured T-shirts and tie my hair into a ponytail. I rarely wear makeup. I am five feet tall, with a short neck and short legs. My eyes are blue and my favorite colour is any shade of blue!
I am feeling a little overwhelmed by this formal party in my honour. I have nothing appropriate to wear. How do you recommend I prepare for my party?
Marilyn replies: Start by paying attention to your personal grooming. A good haircut, glowing complexion, inviting smile, manicured fingers and pedicured toes will help you create a positive message appropriate for the occasion. Plus, you’ll be relaxed after the pampering!
Photographers will usually encourage you to have a professional apply light, natural-looking makeup so the photos capture the “best” you. It is a good idea since the pictures will long survive the party.
You have described yourself as someone who dresses simply for a casual lifestyle. This party is celebrating you on your 60th, so resolve to stay true to yourself. Make the most of your assets, and dress to camouflage your "liabilities."
Be selective. Make certain your outfit suits your personality and flatters you in every way possible. Pay attention to the style, colour and message.
You cannot change your genetic traits so embrace them and work with them. Plan to wear a dress or top with a square or deep oval or V-neck which will lengthen the look of your neck. Avoid choker necklaces.
Wear a wedge, platform or high-heel shoe to lengthen your legs. If you prefer flats, wear them with a shorter skirt and keep them neutral.
Your party dress can reflect your affinity for casual and natural looks. It need not be glitzy or loud. A cotton or linen ensemble in your favorite blue will be perfect. Clean lines will give you height.
Remember you are the guest of honour, so dress up for the party but make sure you are comfortable as well.
Shop for your ideal dress or outfit and buy the items that best speak to and for you. They’ll allow you to shine on this special day. When you find the right outfit you will feel like yourself and be the best that you can be.
This is a celebration of you and for you so resolve to look special for the occasion. Then stand tall, walk confidently and enjoy being the centre of attention!
