Yoga for a cause

Katie Warfield, with her son Sebastien, says her one-hour class is for people to not just do yoga for themselves, but for someone else as well. (SUBMITTED PHOTO)

Practising yoga shouldn’t only be about fitness or profit, according to a local instructor.

“I wanted (to do) yoga not just for myself, but for someone else,” Katie Warfield said, referring to the common yoga practice of doing good by others. “I felt like that was missing in town.”

This week, the young mom launched Good Karma Yoga, a weekly class where 25 per cent of the proceeds go to local charities. A different cause will be supported each two months and class participants themselves get to vote on which organizations they wish to see benefited – Convenant House, Empower Her and the SPCA are the first groups being considered.

One-hour classes run each Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. for $10.

“A lot of the classes in town average between $15 to $20 an hour and I know a lot of people can’t afford that,” Warfield said. “I figure $10 is what most people can afford.”

She added she hoped to offer more classes in future should demand grow.
