Fall hairstyles get serious
By HEATHER TOSKAN, QMI Agency
You may have let your hair down for summer, but it's time to shake off the beach and reach for products to create a polished back to school and back to work look. Dramatic, retro-glam styles of all lengths are making headlines this fall. “Fall is all about volume and we’ll be seeing, wavy, loose down-dos, as well as texturized up-dos and chic ponytails, with volume. These looks are more structured and sophisticated than the tousled, natural air-dried waves of summer,” says Eric Del Monaco, the official hair artist and colorist for L’Oreal Paris and owner of Del Monaco Hair Studio in Toronto. Whether you prefer long glamourous waves inspired by Old Hollywood or a shorter length, there’s plenty to choose from. “There’s always a demand for short hair cuts for women. Now and going forward into 2011, if it's short, it's very short, like the androgynous slicked back look that rocked Alexander Wang’s runway. The pixie crop continues to evolve and will stay on trend,” says Wendy Belanger, the International Artistic Director for Pureology Serious Colour Care and the owner of Influence Salon, in Calgary. “The pixie crop is an easy transition cut for fall from summer. Celebs such as Carey Mulligan and Rihanna have embraced this hair cut. It’s also an easy cut to grow out if you choose to go long later,” says Francis David, co-owner of Parlour Salon in Toronto. Short asymmetrical bobs and other sleek, linear dos are also stylish. “For an edgy, trendy look with medium length hair, we suggest the halo, which is a throwback to the bowl cut. This very stylish, sleek and straight look has been seen on some famous lady rockers such as Lady Gaga and Karen Oh,” says David. “Many women opt for medium-to-long hair that enables them to style it in a chic ponytail or wear it loose with a hint of volume and long cascading waves. These styles are easy and versatile and fit well with many women’s lifestyles,” says Del Monaco. Along with the sixties-inspired ponytail, modern versions of the beehive are among the other big runway-inspired hits. “The return to classic femininity presented at Louis Vuitton and the vintage lines in the skirts at Prada worn with full and high beehives with a headband is very fresh. There’s less messiness in fall hair styles,” says Kathy Simon, a Montreal-based North American spokesperson for Schwarzkopf Professional hair products. Hair colour goes forward warmly. Trade in bleached-out beach blond for warm golden tones or spicy browns that won’t wash your skin tone out as your tan fades. Red is the colour of choice for those ready to stand out and black also strikes a dramatic stance. “Cool reds are a very strong colour trend this season, both with the popularity of Christina Hendricks and with the strong influence of old school Hollywood glamour. But this hair colour trend is also a reflection of the strong use of bright red on the runways at Lanvin, Bottega Veneta and Marni,” says Simon. |
