Passport needed for U.S. travel next week

By NICOLE FEENSTRA, CANOE.CA

If you haven't applied for or obtained your Canadian passport yet, prepare for some trouble when crossing the border next week.

Starting June 1, Canadian and American citizens will be required to show one of four travel documents to cross the border at land or sea ports.

Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, Canadian travellers will require a passport, NEXUS card, or province-issued Enhanced Driver's Licenses to cross.

U.S. and Canadian children under age 16 arriving by land or sea from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean only need proof of citizenship, such as an original or copy of a birth certificate, a consular report of birth abroad, a Naturalization Certificate or a Canadian Citizenship Card.
