Though many Canadians pinched a few pennies this past summer by vacationing at or close to home, the outlook for our fall and winter travel seasons promises to keep Canadians feeling sunny, despite the economic deep freeze.
The first ever Canadian Hotel Price Index from Hotels.ca shows Canadians who vacationed in the first half of 2009 spent, on average, less on hotels in every major country destination than they did in the same time frame last year.
Thanks to falling rates from hoteliers, not to mention the boost in the Canadian dollar and the lack of business travel, you'll be surprised what you can afford abroad right now.
According to the Canadian HPI report, the average price for a room in Sydney, Australia in the first half of 2009 was $147. This is down 10 per cent from the same time in 2008. If you prefer the spice of flamenco dancing and Spanish cuisine, head to Madrid, where Canadians can get a room from $145 per night, 15 per cent less than was paid last year.
If domestic travel is more your thing, take advantage of the great deals to be found in Vancouver before the 2010 Winter Olympic Games kick off next February.
The HPI revealed rates began at $144 per night during the first half of 2009, down 10 per cent from last year and affordable enough to treat yourself to the West Coast and a glimpse of the already-opened Olympic venues.
