Raise a glass to Beijing's Olympic beer

Even beer can embody the Olympic spirit.

The Import Vintners & Spirits Association featured Yanjing Beer, official sponsor of the Beijing summer Games, yesterday, during an exclusive tasting at the Pan Pacific Hotel.

Shu Guo, Yanjing's Canadian agent, said the partnership between the brewer and the Chinese Olympic Committee is in support of sport rather than the bottom line.

"First you make profit from society and then you make contribution to society," she said.

Yanjing, founded in 1980, is the ninth-largest brewer in the world and China's official state beer.

Shu said Yanjing did not stumble into Vancouver by accident, as the brewer is eyeing an entry point into the Canadian market tied to the summer Games.

"We would like to contribute to the 2010 Olympic Games as well," she said.
