A former UBC student who shut the school down with two threatening e-mails last year was given a one-year conditional sentence Tuesday.
Hwi Lee, 20, was joined by a large contingent of family and friends in Richmond Provincial Court Tuesday to hear his fate from Justice Ronald Fratkin.
While acknowledging Lee was under severe pressure to do well in school, Fratkin said the student's threats were "planned and deliberate" and warranted more than the suspended sentence defence was asking for.
"The fact is, there are thousands of students facing the same stresses, strains and pressures," Fratkin told Lee in court. "You will have to learn to deal with these pressures."
In addition to his one-year conditional sentence, Lee is not allowed on any UBC campuses and must write a letter to the student paper outlining his actions, court hearing and feelings.
He will also be on probation for two years after his sentence.
Lee was convicted of one count of uttering threats and one count of mischief over $5,000.
