Veteran broadcaster launches Olympic documentary

By BOB MACKIN, 24 HOURS

For eight years, veteran broadcast journalist George Orr chased the story about the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The former CBC and BCTV reporter, who teaches at British Columbia Institute of Technology, turned 600 hours of videotape into the 71-minute documentary Chasing the Dream. It focuses on the three main players of the Games and issues such as aboriginal participation, homelessness, security and the anti-Olympic movement.

“In part it is a story about the Premier, but mostly about (John) Furlong and (Jack) Poole who open up on camera in revealing ways you won't hear anywhere else,” Orr said.

Limited seats are available to Monday night’s screening at District 319 via george@chasingthedream.ca.

Filmmaker Conrad Schmidt’s Five Ring Circus was released in 2007 and focuses on the Games’ environmental impacts. Producer Jon Ornoy and director Andrew Lavigne are nearing completion of With Glowing Hearts, which documents the Games’ impacts on the Downtown Eastside and how social media is empowering the community.
