Thousands have gathered outside the Vancouver Art Gallery to protest the Olympic Games hours before the opening ceremonies.

Seniors, public school teachers and other citizens are standing shoulder to shoulder with a cast of characters known to locals for their extreme opposition to spending billions to finance the hallmark sporting event.

Anti-Olympic protesters were met by a pro-Olympic rally organized by Vacouver fashion designer Jason Dussault.

Dussault said he wanted to bring balance to the event by making it clear to passersby and visitors that not all of Vancouver is against the Games.

The protest is expected to culminate into a march on the opening ceremonies at BC Place.
