Gold billboard unveiled in Vancouver
Science World shows that two ounces of gold can cover a billboard

Created by Vancouver’s Rethink Communications, it’s all part of Science World’s latest summer exhibit, Treasure. An entire billboard has been covered in gold to dramatize this scientific fact: A mere two ouncees of gold can be pounded so thin it covers more than 200 square feet. (CARMINE MARINELLI, 24 HOURS)

Gold is still a favourite in this city three months after the Olympics.

Science World and Rethink Communications unveiled their head-turning all-gold billboard Wednesday at West 4th Ave and Anderson Street.

The entire billboard is wrapped in 22-karat gold, while the message on it simple reads '2 oz. of gold can cover a billboard'.

Another board is encrusted with 9,000 diamonds - albeit fake diamonds - at the 1200 block of Powell Street.

The two displays aim to attract people to Science World's current summer exhibit, Treasure, which opened May 7 and ends September 13.

"We thought that instead of telling people how great gold and diamonds are, why don't we demonstrate it," said Rethink's art director Carson Ting, who was part of the group that came up with the concept.

After verifying through credible sources including Science World that two ounces of gold can indeed cover a billboard, Rethink asked Brain Dedora, a well-renowned gilder, to complete the project.

The billboard costs about $11,000 and has a security guard stationed beside it for 24 hours, up until Friday when it'll be taken down.

"This gold on the board is so thin that if you try to scrape a piece of it, it'll disintegrate into thin air," said Ting.
