Mayor's $120K middle kingdom mission about connections

By BOB MACKIN, 24 HOURS

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson’s $120,000 taxpayer-funded trade mission to China brought home no revenue-generating contracts.

Executives of 22 Vancouver companies paid a combined $350,000 to join the Mayor and Vancouver Economic Development Commission representatives on the Sept. 5-16 mission.

“It’s up to them to do these deals with partners in China, hopefully we see real results in the coming weeks,” Robertson said.

Three memorandums of understanding were inked, including one at the Shanghai World Expo between Cisco Systems of San Jose, Calif., Pulse Energy of Vancouver and Vancouver city hall to explore a collaboration.

Vancouver agreed to explore low-carbon initiatives with sister city Guangzhou while a group of Vancouver sustainable building designers agreed to collaborate on a research and development centre in Tianjin.
