Finding homes for Games
By Bob Mackin, 24 hours
A Vancouver non-profit society is promoting a way to solve two homeless problems. Home For The Games aims to compile an online catalogue of at least 1,000 properties in Metro Vancouver and match them with Olympic visitors seeking reasonably priced, Games-time accommodation. “We’re here for those people who would like to share the Olympic experience, be reasonably compensated and also share that benefit with people who are less fortunate in Vancouver,” said founder Charles Montgomery. Home For The Games is suggesting a minimum $100 nightly charge per bedroom. The 50% deposits are earmarked for the Streetohome Foundation and Covenant House. Landlords collect the balance and receive a charitable tax receipt. Montgomery said the goal is to raise $750,000. Volunteers will evaluate properties for listing on HomeForTheGames.com. No fees will be charged, but landlords are responsible for insurance and permits. Fair-pricing will be encouraged. |
