Two confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza and a spike in absenteeism has school and health officials on high alert.
Doug Lauson, superintendent of Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver, confirmed one student at Notre Dame regional secondary school was diagnosed with the virus while about 100 students missed class yesterday causing the board to notify Vancouver Coastal Health.
A second student at St. Patrick's regional secondary is H1N1 positive but health authorities had yet to be notified yesterday as less than 10 per cent of students are absent from school.
"It was anticipated and it still is anticipated as we approach the fall and winter season and there are going to be more cases," Lauson said.
Meanwhile, Elsie Roy elementary school in Yaletown recorded 120 out of 351 students away ill.
Both school boards have kept in regular contact with parents at affected schools.
Maintenance staff have stepped up housekeeping to curb the virus's spread.
