A coalition of British Columbian women's groups launched a campaign Monday to combat legal action to decriminalize prostitution as a constitutional challenge goes before the courts in Ontario.
"If the court finds that people have a right to communicate and associate for the purposes of prostitution, or that laws that target buyers and pimps interfere with their core liberty interests, it will be difficult for Parliament to enact a new, better law that treats prostitution as sexual exploitation," said UBC law professor Janine Benedet in a statement.
Vancouver based Pivot Legal Society is in the process of launching a similar challenge before B.C. Supreme Court.
