RCMP cop to appear in court for drunk driving

By DHARM MAKWANA, 24 HOURS

An RCMP constable is scheduled to appear in provincial court Nov. 20 to answer charges of impaired driving.

Vancouver police arrested the suspect, who is posted at ‘E’ Division with the general duty protective policing unit, after he allegedly crashed his personal vehicle into a barrier at the south end of Ironworkers Memorial Bridge while off-duty at about 4:20 a.m. Saturday.

Police took breath samples at the scene, which were determined to be over the legal limit.

Vancouver police Const. Lindsey Houghton said the breathalyzer result would not be released in advance of the trial.

The suspect escaped without injury but his two passengers sustained minor injuries.

Police issued a 24-hour suspension and a 90-day driving prohibition the suspect at the time of the arrest.

Supervisors assigned the constable to administrative duties pending the outcome of a code of conduct review.

RCMP will release the suspect’s identity when charges are approved by Crown Counsel.
