Relief map on display again?

By BOB MACKIN

Part of the Challenger Relief Map of B.C. is in custody at the 2010 Winter Olympics' security force headquarters, with the blessing of the creator's granddaughter.

The 6,080-square foot plywood map took George Challenger seven years to build. It was installed in the B.C. Pavilion at the Pacific National Exhibition for the 1954 British Empire Games.

The building was demolished in 1997 and the map was warehoused. The southwest B.C. section was refurbished and now graces the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit's atrium in Richmond.

"We're simply happy that someone has taken an interest, is using it and bringing it once again to people's attention so that hopefully, in the long run, it will be on display for everybody to see," said Joanne Challenger.

V2010 ISU chief Bud Mercer said the map is useful for planning the Games' $900 million security operation and as a showpiece for visiting dignitaries and security officials from future bid and host cities.

"The section of the map displayed provides us with an instant and accurate geographical perspective of the security task this unit is facing," Mercer said.

Challenger Map Foundation chair Alan Clapp said the southwest B.C. section could go on a public tour after the Games.

He said the whole map could find a permanent home at Vancouver's planned downtown transport hub.
