Another rehearsal underway

By BOB MACKIN

Olympic cops and troops are gearing up for their third pre-Games rehearsal this month.

The Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit and Joint Task Force Games' Pegasus Guardian is scheduled for Oct. 19-23.

"That's probably our biggest exercise internally, that's where we will have our commanders in place, there will be no actors in the chairs," said V2010 ISU chief Bud Mercer. "To do that testing there will be a lot of actual play outside on the water, in the air. It's to test the interaction and communication between the key decision makers."

Mercer and Canadian Forces Rear Adm. Tyrone Pile are expected to reveal some details at a news conference next week.

Exercise Gold, the biggest of three privy council-mandated Olympic security rehearsals, is scheduled for Nov. 2-6. The period includes the 100-day countdown to the Games.

"It's about every piece of security and public safety in the Games and it's the validation exercise which will confirm Canada's readiness to host the Games," Mercer said.
