Victims' mother files lawsuit

By MATT KIELTYKA

Eileen Mohan's last two years have been filled with nightmare following the slaying of her son in Surrey.

But even as an entire community rallied behind the grieving mother after Chris Mohan - an innocent bystander - was caught up in the infamous "Surrey Six" gang slaughter, she found herself increasingly alone in her battle for justice.

On Friday, Mohan was forced to launch civil action against her son's alleged killers, among others, without the aid of a lawyer.

They're too scared to touch her case, she says.

"It's totally frustrating, I'm praying a lawyer will come to our aid for a contingency fund," she told 24 hours. "But I have not been able to get one. They hesitate because of the people named in the lawsuit. They don't want to get involved."

The writ of summons filed by Mohan named notorious gang member James Bacon and Red Scorpion associates Cody Haevischer, Matthew Johnston and Quang "Michael" Le as defendants.

All four are facing charges in connection with the Oct. 19, 2007 mass murder.

Dennis Karbovanec, who pleaded guilty to killing Mohan, is also named - along with the tenant, owners, strata council and property management company of the suite where the murders took place, next door to Mohan's condo.

"The last two years have been total destruction," Mohan said. "Once the trial starts, I hope there is some good that comes out of all the harm done to my family."
