H1N1 vaccine arrives in B.C.

By DHARM MAKWANA

The H1N1 influenza vaccine arrived in British Columbia earlier than expected.

The vaccine will be made available in a phased approach -- first targeting pregnant women, people with underlying chronic medical conditions and aboriginal populations in outlying areas.

The vaccines are made of inactivated influenza virus and will not cause the flu.

There will be enough vaccine to offer to everyone in B.C. over the next couple of weeks.

Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall said he expects about 10 per cent of the population to come down with H1N1.

Those who are currently suffering from flu like symptoms are encouraged to get the vaccination.
